FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A winding highway that runs between Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona, is the key front for firefighters battling a major wildfire that's burned more than 11 square miles because it's too dangerous to descend into the steep canyon. Fire managers say it's likely to triple in size because they plan to let the flames burn into flatter lands where they can corral it. So far, the Slide Fire has already cost $2.2 million to fight and could take another 10 days to fully control.

DEMING, N.M. (AP) — A fiery multi-vehicle crash along Interstate 10 in New Mexico has killed seven people. State Police say eight vehicles were involved in the crash in Hidalgo County, several miles from the Arizona border. It happened Thursday afternoon as the region was hit by a violent storm system hit the region with hail, damaging winds that stirred up thick dust.

BOSTON (AP) — Rescuers have called off the search for four crew members of a British yacht that went missing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean last week. A U.S. Navy warship located the overturned hull of the yacht on Friday, but there was no sign of its crew as its life raft was still stowed. Coast Guard officials say "extreme sea conditions" at the time of the yacht's distress call put the crew's estimated survival time at 20 hours.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a 61-year-old Alaska man has been indicted on charges of making false statements to the FBI regarding the 1978 bombing of the trans-Alaska pipeline. Prosecutors say Phillip Martin Olson acknowledged carrying out the bombing, but the statute of limitations has run out for prosecuting the actual bombing. However, they say Olson falsely implicated another person in assisting him.

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The wife of ailing radio personality Casey Kasem has been given a California court order that temporarily suspends her powers to determine her husband's medical care amid concerns about his health and welfare. The order also expands daughter Kerri Kasem's authority to determine whether her father, who's now in Washington state, is receiving adequate medical care. Wife Jean Kasem tells KING-TV that her husband is getting the best possible care and suggestions otherwise are "unfounded" and "malicious."

NEW YORK (AP) — Sewage runoff is closing beaches and suspending shellfish harvesting on New York's Long Island. Nassau County officials have shut down half a dozen beaches State environmental officials say they've temporarily halted shellfish harvesting in Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor. They say the ban will remain in effect until they determine water quality is suitable for the harvest of shellfish for human consumption.
