Nothing like a little intense competition to get the powers that be moving forward with plans to construct a new Broadway-style theater in the Salt Lake Valley!

Salt Lake City leaders have had plans in the works for decades. Most recently, such a theater has come to be considered a cornerstone of the massive "Downtown Rising" effort to revitalize the capital city's traditional downtown area.

Now Sandy City is getting into the act. A developer wants to build a similar 2,500 seat theater in the heart of Sandy.

Studies, over the years, have shown the region can only support one such theater. Two of them, most likely would flounder.

In KSL's view, there is one overriding reason why it should be built in downtown Salt Lake City - it should go where it can become an integral part of, and contribute to the synergy of a broader cultural arts district - not a standalone facility in suburbia.

Sandy City's full-court press to build a large theater may be good in one respect - it has forced Salt Lake City officials to move forward more expeditiously with their own plans. For that, Sandy should be commended. But Salt Lake City is where the theater should be located.
