The BYU Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season with today's 45-13 win over Weber State. Here are a few thoughts...
-The final score is impressive but the Cougars can still clean some things up. Just like last week, BYU can feel good about a blowout win but also realize that there is still room for improvement.
-Once the BYU defense settled in, they were tough to beat. They made the afternoon very difficult on Wildcat quarterback Mike Hoke. Even though BYU allowed their first touchdown of the year, the defensive play was solid.
-BYU's offense started slow, but eventually got going. Cody Hoffman was spectacular. Hoffman finished the day with seven catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.
-The Cougar offensive line had some issues. The Wildcat defense should not have been able to be in the backfield as often as they were.
-The BYU running game was good. Michael Alisa finished with 53 yards and a touchdown. For the day, Cougar rushers piled up 225 yards on the ground.
-It was nice to see a few Cougars get their first catches of the year. Richard Wilson, Marcus Mathews and Alex Kuresa all caught passes for the first time this season.
-Because of the score, BYU was able to play some of the back-ups. Getting those guys productive reps will pay dividends for the Cougars down the road.
-Prior to the game I said there were three things that BYU needed to accomplish. The first was to win, the second was to stay healthy, and the third was to get the younger guys some game action. All three things happened. BYU and the fans should be happy.
