This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Utah has always been known for our entrepreneurial spirit, and we have the business climate to prove it. We've been named first for our economic outlook for the past four years running and first for our competitive environment.

Some of that innovation comes from the pioneer spirit that founded our state as well as long-time businesses like Leland Milling Company in Spanish Fork. This company has been around since 1898 supplying feed for all types of farm animals. For years most people have found out about this company through word of mouth, and many are surprised to find out how long they've been in business. Just think of the jobs a pioneer business like this has sustained over the years!

The Mill custom mixes the best in all varieties of livestock feed. This includes sizes to fit anyone's needs from 50 pounds for a backyard chicken coop to 50 tons for a large dairy farm. These mixes are made with all natural ingredients, meaning no chemicals or animal byproducts, so they're better for the animals.

Owner David Isaac says one of the major trends they've seen is for people to raise chickens in their backyard. Not only do the chickens provide eggs and meat, but they also teach children responsibility and provide the farm experience without the farm.

Ever heard of Archibald Gardner? He's the one who built Gardner Mill where Gardner Village sits today, and he built this mill too. David's father and grandfather purchased Leland Milling Company in 1955. He started working there as a little boy and after returning from a two-year service mission decided it made sense to purchase the mill and continue running it. It's worked out well for him, and he anticipates passing it on to his son in years to come.

With such a well-established company, of course there's wisdom passed from one generation to the next. For Leland Milling Company, it's the old standbys of integrity, hard work, perseverance and making sure the customer is the No. 1 priority.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
