PROVO — Execution inside an opponent's 20-yard line isn’t easy.

At BYU, redzone — or ‘bluezone’ as the Cougars call it — execution is practiced as much as any other drill, and it’s imperative for the offense to get the ball into the end zone.

Because the space between the line of scrimmage and end zone becomes smaller and smaller with every yard gained, the offense is faced with tighter coverages. To go over the top of an opposing defense is one of the best options.

At 6-foot-7, 233 pounds and with a 35-inch vertical leap, incoming tight end Colby Jorgensen is well-equipped to go over the top of any coverage.

“There really shouldn’t be anyone that can guard me,” said Jorgensen about his ability to execute a fade pattern in the back of the end zone.

Jorgensen, who graduated from Timpview High in Provo, comes to BYU with some amazing physical abilities. He recorded the fourth-best SPARQ (speed, power, agility, reaction, quickness) score nationally against the best football recruits the first time he was tested.

He took part in a national competition held at Nike headquarters and improved upon his overall rating, but finished eighth among the other top 25 SPARQ performers.

Along with his vertical leap, he recorded a time of 4.60 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which is used to measure quickness, and a 4.15 in the second shuttle, which was used to measure agility.

Overall, Jorgensen should have the ability to carve out a special niche for himself as a real bluezone threat.

“I hope to come in and play,” he said. “I don’t really want to redshirt my first year. (I want) to contribute on the team however it might be.”

Jorgensen will join with his brother Austen Jorgensen and his cousin Spencer Hadley at BYU before leaving for his LDS Mission after his first season.
