SEATTLE — The University of Utah softball team’s run to consecutive Super Regionals has come to an end.
No. 7 Washington did all of its scoring in the first two innings, and held on for a 2-1 win over the No. 16 Utes in Sunday’s decisive game of the Seattle Super Regional to advance to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Washington hurler Taran Alvelo (32-7) allowed just one run on eight hits with three strikeouts in the complete-game win.
The host Huskies scored first, netting a run each in the first and second inning to take an early 2-0 advantage.
Utah’s Heather Bowen singled in the top of the fourth to load the bases with two outs, but Washington induced Kay Kay Fronda into a 4-3 putout to end the inning without any damage.
The Utes (37-16) stranded seven runners before Anissa Urtez’s sacrifice fly gave the visitors’ a first run in the top of the fifth, 2-1. But the tying run never came.
Utah starter Katie Donovan (18-10) spun a three-hitter with two strikeouts, three walks and two earned runs in five innings.
With the win, the Huskies (48-17) took five out of six meetings with Utah in the 2017 season.
