SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A sea lion at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo has died during a medical procedure.

Zoo officials say Rocky the sea lion had an infection because of swollen lymph nodes throughout his body. He died while undergoing surgery Wednesday.

Rocky came to the zoo in 2012 after he washed ashore in Oakland, California and was discovered by rescue crews. The sea lion was found with bubbles in his brain and a pellet lodged in his head.

A news release from the zoo says an MRI of Rocky's brain showed he had suffered past strokes most likely due to the trauma he experienced prior to his arrival at the zoo.

Zoo officials say Rocky had overcome the odds and showed a willingness to learn new behaviors despite the challenges he faced.
