HURRICANE — A man is in critical condition after falling out of a moving Toyota pickup truck in Hurricane on Monday.
The 42-year-old man was reportedly sitting on a wooden chair in the bed of the truck when one of the chair's legs broke as the vehicle made a turn at about 1:55 p.m., according to the Hurricane City Police Department. As a result, police said, the man fell out of the truck at 300 West and State Street and hit his head on the ground.
The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to police.
"This is a reminder of how dangerous it can be riding in the bed of a truck, and the importance of riding inside the vehicle, using a seat belt," a statement from Hurricane police reads. "State law requires all persons must use a seat belt."
The 1992 Toyota pickup truck was being driven by a 40-year-old man, according to police. They said a 44-year-old occupant was riding inside the truck cabin. The incident is still under investigation and no citations have been issued yet.
