MIDVALE — Police are trying to determine what caused a man to crash the car he was driving into a freeway barrier, then leap to the pavement below.
The man, who police have not identified, was in critical condition following the incident near 7100 South on I-15 Wednesday.
Other drivers headed south on I-15 about 11:30 a.m. saw the driver slow down and drift out of his lane to the left, then accelerate headed back to the right where he crashed into a concrete wall, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Steven Manfull.
The driver then got out of the vehicle and jumped over a barrier, falling about 20 feet to the concrete below, Manfull said.
Firefighters brought in ladders to reach the man where he had fallen, then rushed him to an area hospital where he remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
Police were working to identify him and determine whether he owned the vehicle he was driving. UHP troopers were also waiting at the hospital for a chance to ask the man why he ran.
