CEDARVIEW, Duchesne County — Fire officials say a space heater left on overnight sparked a fire Thursday morning that spread from a detached garage to a home.
Roosevelt firefighters were paged out at 6:43 a.m. to a home near 3400 West and 4000 North in Cedarview, Assistant Roosevelt Fire Chief Nathan Goodrich said.
Goodrich called for additional help from the Neola Fire Department — based on the column of thick black smoke he could see — before Roosevelt firefighters reached the scene 16 minutes later.
Volunteer firefighters from both departments worked to extinguish the flames, but the house and garage are a total loss, Goodrich said.
"(The homeowner) was working on his vehicles last evening and was using a space heater to keep the garage warm," the assistant chief said. "That was left on overnight and this morning a neighbor came and knocked on (the homeowner's) door and let him know there was smoke coming out of the corner of this garage."
No one was hurt in the fire.
