SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials say 19 farmers markets will accept food stamps this summer in a move aimed at getting healthier food in the hands of Utah's low-income families.
Utahns Against Hunger announced that seven markets are participating in the program for the first time, including ones in Roosevelt, Moab and Tooele. The advocacy group says it recruited five of the new participants by using a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant through the state Department of Workforce Services.
The organization says the program not only helps food stamp recipients, but also expands the customer base for local farmers selling at the markets.
Representatives from the Utah State University Extension are expected to visit some of the markets and offer cooking demonstrations so customers know how to best use their produce.
