GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors on Friday named Avery Maehrer, a journalism major who graduated this month from Temple University, as the winner of the $3,000 Ralph Flamminio Memorial Scholarship.
Maehrer, 22, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was recognized at the annual PAPME awards ceremony in Gettysburg.
PAPME's award honoring the former editor of The Morning Call in Allentown and Coatesville Record salutes an exemplary Pennsylvania college student who best displays the ideals of Ralph Flamminio — passionate about journalism and the First Amendment, and a champion for a better informed citizenry.
This past school year, Maehrer served as the editor-in-chief of The Temple News, where he launched a new wing of the publication's website devoted to long-form enterprise content while leading a staff of roughly 20 students and dozens of freelance reporters. He has interned at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, in addition to interning at nonprofits, including Make-A-Wish and the Philadelphia Film Society.
Maehrer was chosen from among 14 applicants for his diverse portfolio of work, which included "Pain and the Game," a seven-month investigative report on Temple's track and field program. The story earned four Student Keystone Press Awards from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia. Overall, The Temple News won 21 Keystones this year, breaking the state record for the division of colleges with enrollment of 10,000 or more.
Maehrer also was named the winner of the Richie Ashburn Award in 2014 by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association and earned the Ralph Vigoda Memorial Scholarship from Temple's journalism department earlier this year. Maehrer graduated with honors from Temple's School of Media and Communication.
In his letter of recommendation, John DiCarlo, student media program director at Temple, called Maehrer "one of the finest student journalists" and leaders he has seen in his more than 13 years at the university.
Maehrer is a graduate of Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, where he first started his journalism career as the sports editor of The Stinger.
