SALT LAKE CITY — Families all over the state, regardless of their Mexican background, get together to celebrate Cinco de Mayo; here are some of the events in Utah.

Some people may think they're celebrating Mexico's Independence Day, which is in September, as they finish off the last tortilla chip in the bowl, but they're actually celebrating the anniversary of the Mexican state of Puebla's victory over the French. Armed with the facts of this celebration, attend some of the events listed below to show off you historical acumen.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Boondock's Fun

Come party with Mama Latina and get a discounted entrance fee for mentioning Utah Mamá Latina. Eat some delicious food and enjoy a night full of activities for the whole family. And to top it all off, Free Cinco de Mayo Arts and Crafts.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Gracie's Center

Utah's Gracie's will be celebrating all day from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Live music will be provided by the Latin Jazz Factory All Stars from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with no cover charge. A rolling cooler and golf bags are just a couple of the prizes that will be given away at this event.

Midvale Cinco de May Celebration

Considered the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in Utah's South Valley, this event will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9. There will be a Kid's Carnival, live music and entertainment, a parade, cinco bingo, a movie in the park, and much more. Admission and parking will be free.

Our America: the Latino Presence in American Art

Running until May 17, this exhibit is presenting the rich cultural presence of Latino art in America, held at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. This exhibit has been taken completely from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection of Latino Art. Admission is $9 and $7 for students and military.

You may also wish to celebrate at some of the best and most authentic restaurants that the valley has to offer. Some of these restaurants listed have been featured on the Food Network, national travel magazines, and multiple best of state awards. It may be the simplest way to celebrate, and also the most delicious:

Red Iguana's, which is best known for their award winning Moles and complex sauces.

Frida's Bistro featuring upscale Mexican dishes and the state's best desserts award.

Alamexo is an alternative upscale choice with unbeatable tamales.

Taqueria 27 has three locations with their unique twist on Mexico's street fare.

Mi Preferida 104.7 FM celebrated its Cinco de Mayo on Saturday in West Jordan. Over two thousand and five hundred people attended. Telemundo Utah also celebrated in West Valley for the 14th consecutive year with over 15,000 people in attendance, including the Consul of Mexico.
