MURRAY — A multi-vehicle accident critically injured two people and forced the closure of the southbound lanes of State Street at 4800 South Monday night.

The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. Witnesses told police a silver BMW was driving south at a high rate of speed and crashed into another car that was attempting to turn left at the 4800 South intersection.

The collision caused the BMW to ricochet into a parked car and then a pole, Murray Police Lt. Doug Roberts said. The driver and passenger of the BMW were transported to the hospital in critical condition, he said.

A condition on the occupants of the car that was hit was not provided.

An accident reconstruction team was headed out to the scene Monday night to conduct an investigation, Roberts said.

"As far as charges go, for anyone, we're not at liberty to say that until we get the full investigation," the lieutenant said.

The road remained closed as investigators worked at the scene. Drivers who were planning to take southbound State Street Monday night were advised to find an alternate route.
