SALT LAKE CITY — While patients are battling cancer, they may receive help for medical costs, but one foundation looks to give other financial service. Friday, they held a benefit to raise money to continue their efforts.
From the moment a person is diagnosed with cancer, they enter a battle for their lives.
"It feels like the world is stopped, but it's not," said cancer survivor Rylee Coggins.
All while the expenses add up. The medical bills for these patients are astronomical. But that's not their only financial burden, and that's where Needs Beyond Medicine comes in.
"(We) help cover costs that are associated with every day needs: Rent, groceries, transportation costs," said Needs Beyond Medicine Executive Director Philip Brown.
Those basic needs, when one is faced with mounting medical treatment costs, become a big financial burden.
Brown, knows what these patients and their families go through. His mother died from ovarian cancer when he was 14-years-old. He started Needs Beyond Medicine because he faced the reality that even through chemo and radiation, life must go on.
"It's a mental drain and we're here just to alleviate that as best as we can," Brown said.
Photographer Chad Hurst, also a cancer survivor, donated his services in hopes of inspiring the public to see what he sees: the people in need behind this disease.
"Daily expenses become just too much to handle," he said. "This organization really helps with that."
