LAYTON — If you have ever driven in the area of Hill Field Road in Layton, then chances that you understand the traffic headaches that come along with trying to navigate that busy stretch of roadway.

Now, newly installed turn lanes are expected to bring some relief to beleaguered motorists.

The Utah Department of Transportation Friday announced the completion of the first of four ThrU Turn lanes to be placed in the high-traffic area. The newest turn is located on the east side of I-15. The remaining turns will be open on Sunday, said UDOT spokesman John Gleason.

"This area has notoriously been a major point of traffic congestion," he said. "A lot of people have avoided the area outright because it's so difficult to navigate."

To mitigate the congestion, ThrU Turns will be installed at the intersections of Hill Field and Main on the west side and Hill Field and Gordon Ave on the east side, resulting in restriction of left turn and through access to Layton Hills Mall at Gordon Avenue, he said.

Traffic from the mall will be spread across the other access points, aiding in the elimination of congestion so close to the freeway, he said. Meanwhile, another left turn lane will be added from the northbound to westbound turn lanes at Gordon Avenue and Main Street on the west side, with an additional lane to be installed under the I-15 structures in each direction along with reconstruction of the Hill Field Road interchange.

Total cost of the project is estimated at $40 million over two years. Completion is scheduled for fall of next year, Gleason said.

When finished, the project also will include the first locally completed "Z crossing" for pedestrians, electronic variable message signs announcing ThrU Turn openings and construction the new bridges on both sides of I-15.

"The goal with the (overall) project is to address the congestion issues and cut down on delays — to make it easier for people to drive through here," Gleason said.
