SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed this week against a recently resigned Iron County sheriff's deputy stemming from an alleged assault.

Ronald Skeem, 46, was charged in 5th District Court Monday with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor, for an incident that occurred on Aug. 22.

Court documents do not elaborate on the details of Skeem's alleged offense. The Independent, a weekly St. George newspaper, reports Skeem and fellow deputy Adam Burton were drinking together when an argument turned into a physical confrontation. Skeem allegedly punched Burton in the face, the newspaper reported.

Neither man was on duty at the time, but both of them resigned soon afterward from the Iron County Sheriff's Office, according to The Independent.

Cedar City police handled the incident originally. Court documents show 5th District Judge Keith Barnes voluntarily recused himself after "find(ing) he has a potential conflict with the case."

The case was reassigned Tuesday to 5th District Judge John Walton. No initial court date has been scheduled and Skeem has not been arrested.

Calls to the sheriff's office Friday were not returned.
