SALT LAKE CITY— More than 200 municipal leaders from across the nation convened in Utah's capital this week to discuss federal action priorities and policy positions during the National League of Cities summer leadership meetings.

"This week (we discussed) the issues that matter to cities, including supporting our transportation infrastructure, public safety and creating a level playing field for our community business," said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, who also serves as league president. "(I was) also excited to showcase the innovative and creative initiatives in Salt Lake City that have helped our city grow and thrive."

The conference included a number of mobile workshops for the visiting city leaders to see how Salt Lake City is innovating in areas including transportation and sustainability.

Clarence Anthony, National League of Cities CEO, thanked Becker for hosting the meetings in Salt Lake City.

"As we met to discuss city priorities, we (were) fortunate to experience how Salt Lake City has innovated to become more sustainable and accessible for its residents," Anthony said. "The city is a leading example for how you can tackle regional and global challenges on the local level."

During the meetings, city leaders considered amendments to the league's municipal policy, which will be voted on in November by members at an annual business meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

The league's action priorities this year are closing the online sales tax loophole, investing in transportation priorities and protecting municipal bonds.
