SALT LAKE CITY — Spring gives the earth a fresh start and cheers hearts. What better time to make a difference in the world?

Each Monday, we share stories submitted by our readers about the things they have seen that made their week and inspired them to pay it forward.

On the need to give:

Amanda H.

"We went out to Village Inn the morning of Saturday, Feb. 28, and noticed two elderly people enjoying a meal. The interesting part was that the woman had no use of her limbs or voice so the gentleman was feeding her and talking with her the whole time.

"The love and strength between these two people brought tears to my eyes. My husband noted my emotion and took the time to go pay for their meal — not because they needed it but because we did. They’ll never know the joy they brought to our hearts and I can’t thank them enough for my family being able to witness the powerful picture they set for us."

On supporting a single mother:

Anne L.

"I was a single mom years ago with three kids in elementary school, and had to work many nights and weekends. It was a very difficult time for us as a family, but my neighbors were wonderful and took us under their wings. They shoveled our walks, baby-sat my kids sometimes, and took my young son to soccer practices and games I couldn’t go to.

"My schedule and income got much better, and a few years later I remarried, but I still get emotional when I think of the angels in our lives at that time who made sure we did not go it alone."

On returning what was taken:

Jaime M.

Related:

"Last year my wife purchased presents for our four kids all within a week. She was tired and in our attempt to hide them away from them she left them in her car in our driveway.

"One night all the toys were taken. We didn't know what to do right there and then. About five days later a bag was left on the snow in front of our house. It had some of our kids' toys. We were very happy to give them some presents. I looked at the foot prints on the snow but will never know who changed their mind and decided to make my kids happy and end my worries."

On helping feed a family:

Randi

"I was at Wal-Mart the other day using my WIC checks. After I used my WIC I was about to pay for my other stuff but this nice man behind me paid for my other items. I am so grateful for that.

"He also told me if I needed anything else to grab it and he will wait for me and pay for it too. Thank you so much kind sir. I tried to hold it together but I couldn't. I will for sure pay it forward when I can."
