SALT LAKE CITY — There were four games in Week 5 that featured match ups between ranked teams.
Judge and South Summit backed up their No. 1 rankings by beating ranked teams in their classifications. Judge had no trouble with Union, 42-14, and South Summit almost doubled up Summit Academy on the road, 42-24.
It’s not a surprise that Roy beat Logan and Herriman beat Jordan, but it was surprising how they did it.
Roy had a chance to go to 5-0 for the first time since Jim McMahon was the Royals' quarterback in 1975. Fans would expect their offense to put up points against anyone, but it was the Royal defense that was most impressive in a 36-0 win over Logan.
The defense held Logan’s explosive offense to just 183 total yards and logged a safety in a win so impressive it moved the Royals up to No. 2 in the latest 4A Coaches Poll.
Herriman is known for its tough defense but it was the offense that exploded for 63 points and 595 yards of total offense. The Mustangs moved up to No. 3 in the latest 5A coaches Poll.
Top five performers of the week
Jason Money, QB, Spanish Fork
Money took what the defense gave him Friday night in racking up 378 yards rushing and six touchdowns in a 47-37 win over Maple Mountain. It’s the fifth-best single-game rushing total in state history.
Aleck Russon, RB, Skyline
For the second consecutive week Russon rushed for more than 300 yards with 311 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-42 win over Murray. He now leads the state in rushing with 938 yards.
Kody Wilstead, QB, Pine View
The BYU commit put up big numbers in the Panthers' 42-36 win over rival Dixie. He passed for 501 yards and six touchdowns and now has 19 touchdown passes this season and zero interceptions.
Zach Katoa, RB, American Fork
Katoa starred on both sides of the ball for the Cavemen in a 44-28 win over Westlake. He rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown, caught two passes for 60 yards, returned an interception 5 yards for a touchdown, had a sack and recovered a fumble.
Stetson Clapp, DE, Weber
Clapp had 15 tackles, including eight for a loss and five sacks in Weber’s 19-7 win over Viewmont.
Top five games to watch this week
Game Night Live Game of the Week: No. 2 Pine View at No. 1 Desert Hills, Friday, 7 p.m.
High school football fans in Southern Utah have been waiting for this rematch ever since Desert Hills scored as time expired to defeat Pine View in the 3AA state championship game and claim its first state title. This could very well be a 3AA championship preview once again. Pine View is led by Wilstead, who has thrown 19 touchdowns and no interceptions. The Desert Hills defense, led by 3AA MVP Gabe Sewell, hopes to have the same success it had against Wilstead in last year's title game.
KJZZ Game of the Week: No. 1 Bingham at No. 2 Brighton, Friday, 7 p.m.
Bingham and Brighton will play for the third time in a year on Friday. The top-ranked teams in 5A met in last year’s 5A state championship game. Led by 5A MVP Osa Masina the Bengals hope home-field advantage will help them defeat the Miners, while Bingham looks to prove that the Region 3 title goes through it.
Bountiful at No. 3 Woods Cross, Friday, 7 p.m.
This used to be a very one-sided rivalry, but those days are over. Woods Cross has become a powerhouse in 4A and made this a true rivalry. The Wildcats have won the last two meetings after ending Bountiful’s 23-year winning streak in this cross-town rivalry. The winner remains in first place in Region 6.
No. 5 Pleasant Grove at Riverton, Friday, 7 p.m.
Riverton is the highest scoring team in 5A in averaging 44 points per game. Pleasant Grove is third in 5A with an average of 39 points per game. The two teams may combine to break the scoreboard Friday. Most importantly, the winner will keep pace in the very competitive Region 4 race.
Juan Diego at No. 3 Tooele, Friday, 7 p.m.
Tooele is 5-0 for the first time in school history, and now the Buffaloes face the toughest two-week stretch of their season and it will prove whether or not they are contenders. Before a rivalry clash with Stansbury the Buffaloes need to beat Juan Diego. The Soaring Eagle are trying to rebound from a slow start and could move to 3-0 in region play with a win.
