SALT LAKE CITY — A man whose body was found on a street corner in Salt Lake's Poplar Grove neighborhood Thursday is likely the victim of a homicide, police said.
Gustavo Jarquin, 18, of Salt Lake City received "an apparent gunshot wound," said Salt Lake police detective Veronica Montoya. The medical examiner still has to determine whether the wound was the cause of death, she said.
Police did not say whether they were pursuing suspects.
A customer heading into the Acapulco Market, 1430 W. Indiana Ave. (850 South), found a man lying face down on the grass near the curb on the northwest corner of Indiana and Pueblo Street, according to Montoya. He called police at 7:34 a.m. and responding medical crews confirmed the man was dead.
Police would not initially confirm how the man had died, but officers could be heard informing neighbors that the man had been "shot and killed." They also were seen combing the grass and looking into garbage cans during their investigation.
Investigators were unsure how long the man had been on the grass.
