SALT LAKE CITY — With college football season underway, old rivalries have flared up again and a new map is showing which school has been ranked as the most popular in each state.
An infographic released by Ticket City on Aug. 28 shows that the Utes were ranked as the most popular college football team in Utah. Ticket City gauged the rankings based on data from the following statistics: the number of Facebook fans and Twitter followers on each football team’s official sites, the number of monthly Google searches conducted about each team by users in that state and the median price of tickets on the secondary market for the upcoming season.
The price of tickets is a strong indicator of demand and/or popularity, according to Ticket City, so that indicator was weighed more heavily than the other two categories. The data points were indexed and each team was ranked accordingly.
The rankings were not necessarily influenced by wins as evidenced by Florida’s teams. The Florida State Seminoles were the 2014 national champions, but the Gators were ranked as the most popular team, according to CBS Sports.com.
