SALT LAKE CITY — The first week of the high school football season featured some firsts for programs that haven’t felt the joy of winning in a long time.

North Sevier ended a 25-game losing streak with a 35-19 win over American Leadership.

Carbon, under new head coach Jan Jorgensen, ended a 17-game losing streak with a 30-12 win over Grand.

Provo won for just the second time in three years with a 19-8 win over Payson.

There were also plenty of standout individual performances in Week 1 despite the rain that fell on Friday.

Top Five Performers in Week 1

Weston Horrocks, RB, Union

Horrocks carried the ball 38 times for 342 yards and five touchdowns in the Cougars 48-34 win over Ben Lomond. He also made plays on defense, intercepting two passes.

Tucker Cowdin, Desert Hills

Cowdin was all over the field in Friday’s 35-13 road win against Orem. He had 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks in the victory.

Five games to watch this week

No. 3 Herriman at No. 1 Bingham, Thursday, 7 p.m., KJZZ

It’s not often you get a non-region regular season matchup of top five teams, but that will be the case Thursday night at Bingham High School. The Miners looked like defending state champions in their season debut crushing fifth-ranked Davis on the road 33-14. Herriman also looked dominant in its win over West Jordan.

No. 4 Jordan at No. 2 East, Friday, 7 p.m., KJZZ

This will be the third year in a row that these two powerhouse programs have played and each meeting has been memorable. The first meeting in 2012 was turning into a classic, but it ended with just seconds left in the 3rd quarter when an electrical fire forced the game to be suspended. The two teams put up huge numbers in last year’s meeting, combining for 95 points and 1,333 yards of total offense. East won the track meet 59-36. This matchup also features two of the best players in the state in Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis and East linebacker Christian Folau.

No. 1 South Summit at No. 4 Morgan, Friday, 7 p.m.

This is a rivalry that goes back decades and despite being in different classifications, the bitterness in this rivalry remains. The Wildcats won last year’s matchup 13-12, ending Morgan’s streak of five straight wins in the rivalry. Both teams are state title contenders in their respective classifications and this game will be a good measuring stick for both teams moving forward.

No. 2 North Summit at No. 1 Duchesne, Friday, 7 p.m.

Duchesne enters Friday’s game against North Summit with a state record winning streak of 48 games. That streak may face its biggest challenge yet. North Summit is ranked No. 2 in 2A and was the only team to beat 2A state champion South Summit last season. It looks to be even stronger in 2014 after opening the season with a 40-0 win over Altamont.

No. 1 Judge Memorial at No. 5 Woods Cross, Friday, 7 p.m.

Defending 3A state champion Judge knocked off a bigger school in Week 1 with a thrilling 18-16 win over Pine view. Now they face an even bigger challenge on the road against 4A contender Woods Cross. The Wildcats opened the season with a 19-7 win over Maple Mountain.
