PROVO -- BYU and West Virginia will square off in 2016 at FedEx Field in Washington D.C.

"This is a unique opportunity for our fans on the East Coast to see our football team play in person," said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. "West Virginia is a very good football program and FedEx Field is a fantastic NFL venue. It's a great opportunity for our program."

The neutral-site football game scheduled for Sept. 24, 2016.

FedEx Field, home of the NFL's Washington Redskins, is located in Landover, Md., and has a seating capacity of 91,704 — the largest stadium in the NFL in terms of regular capacity.

The Cougars and Mountaineers, members of the Big East Conference, have never met before in football.

"BYU has been one of the consistently powerful programs over the last 35-40 years," WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. "In so many ways, LaVell Edwards reminds me of Don Nehlen. Both built solid foundations at their respective schools. Anybody that has played quarterback in the NCAA has enormous respect for the quarterback tradition at BYU."
