Lavell Edwards put BYU football on the map in the 1970's, 80's and 90's. Now that map is changing with the conference expansions. Coach Edwards likes the tradition of college football and is not a fan of the realignments.

"To break up 50, 60, 70 years of tradition to form a new conference, it's a sorry state of affairs, I think as far as college athletics and football are concerned." said Edwards.

Texas is expected to announce it will join the Pac 10 Conference in the next week and Coach Edwards doesn't think it's a good fit. "No not for college football, it makes no sense for teams in Texas to be in the Pacific Coast Conference. Money makes a difference."

If Texas A&M follows Texas to the Pac 10 it is expected that Utah would be a solid choice to leave the Mountain West and head for the new Pac 10.

Edwards laments the possibility of seeing his old rivals leave BYU's conference, "I'd surely hate to see them go."

If Utah and BYU are no longer in the same conference, LaVell thinks it will hurt the long standing rivalry of the Utes and Cougars. "No question, I think it would. It would be a matter of time before they probably wouldn't even play each other anymore."
