PROVO -- BYU football has officially entered independence and Bronco Mendenhall will be leading that charge for at least the next three years.

Mendenhall said Tuesday during BYU's media day that he received his contract when last season ended, but athletic director Tom Holmoe wanted to wait to make the announcement official .

Mendenhall's new contract will keep him with the Cougars through the 2013 season, but the school wanted him for even longer. Mendenhall said he turned down the longer offer because he wanted to make sure he earned the position as head coach.

The terms of the contract have not been disclosed, but Mendenhall says he has been treated fairly by the school.

The Cougars open up their first season as independents on September 3 at Ole Miss.
