SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A Mexican official says some Mexican nationals were among the survivors and those who died on a tractor-trailer found at a San Antonio Walmart. Mexican Consul General in San Antonio Reyna Torres says consulate officials are working to identify the survivors and notify family members. Guatemala's foreign ministry, meanwhile, says at least two Guatemalans were on the abandoned rig. The two survivors told officials they crossed the border by foot at Laredo.
CHICAGO (AP) — It could take months for investigators to determine how and why a scheme to smuggle dozens of Mexicans into the United States ended with the death of nine people who were in an overheated tractor-trailer discovered in Texas. But previous cases where smugglers used such trucks to move human cargo shed light on this method of human trafficking _ and how it can go badly wrong. The most notorious case occurred in 2003, when 19 being smuggled in a truck in south Texas died of heat-related injuries.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan health ministry official says 2 people were killed and another 2 injured in a suicide car bomb attack in a western neighborhood of Kabul early Monday morning. Several prominent political leaders live in western Kabul and it has been the scene of past attacks.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The leader of the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza praised a Palestinian who stabbed three Israelis to death in their home in a phone call to the attacker's father. Ismail Haniyeh called the attack "heroic" Sunday and said the assailant "lifted the heads of the nation high."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has indicated that President Donald Trump would sign a sweeping Russia sanctions measure once it moves through Congress. The House could take it up as early as Tuesday. The measure requires him to get Congress' permission before lifting or easing the economic penalties against Moscow. The legislation is aimed at punishing Moscow for meddling in the presidential election and its military aggression in Ukraine and Syria.
