MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Nora is strengthening as it heads into the Central Pacific and could soon become a hurricane, though there is no current threat to land.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm Saturday night had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph). Nora was centered about 1,245 miles (2,005 kms) southeast of South Point, Hawaii.
Forecasters at the center say Nora could become a hurricane by Sunday night. The storm currently poses no threat to land, however, and no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
