AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Akron Children's Hospital in northeast Ohio is nearly ready to open a $180 million addition that includes a larger emergency department and a new care unit for critically ill newborns that is equipped to help parents stay close.
The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/1Qzn3Md ) reports the new ER and outpatient surgery center are scheduled to begin taking patients on May 5.
Also opening then is the new neonatal intensive care unit. The 75 private rooms have sleep sofas, bathrooms and showers so that parents can remain near their infants instead of having to get a spot in the lounge or go home to rest.
The expansion also includes a delivery unit for high-risk babies.
