PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A technology business incubator in Newport is getting a $1.7 million federal grant to help redevelop a former public school building to support defense, marine, climate change, environmental, and digital industries.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration announced the grant on Monday.

It will go to the Newport County Development Council to redevelop the 33,600-square-foot Sheffield public school.

Sen. Jack Reed says the project will help diversify and energize the state's economy and help cement Aquidneck Island as a hub for research, development, technology, and innovation.
