A fire is burning in City Creek Canyon on Salt Lake City's north bench tonight.

The fire started a little bit before 3 p.m., about 2 1/2 miles up the canyon. It is in an area that is not easily accessible because of the rough terrain.

There was no lightning, so investigators assume it is human-caused.

There have been no homes evacuated in the area, but that could change if the winds pick up.

Pat Shea, homeowner and former Bureau of Land Management director, said, "I think there's going to be all right. As long as there's no high winds, the fire fighting people know how to put the fire out. Big winds make for wholly unpredictable events. And so, as long as there's not a wind, I don't worry about it."

Jason Curry, with the Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands, says, "We feel like there's a low chance of it threatening structures at this time. We're certainly going to monitor and certainly going to ramp up resources if that changes. And we'll order more resources in terms of aircraft, hand crews, everything that can be ordered in, in order to protect the homes and the communication facilities on the peaks here. "

Air tankers, helicopters and ground crews are battling the fire. The rough terrain makes it a tough one to put out, and it is expected to burn for a day or two.
