MILES CITY, Mont. (AP) — Officials in eastern Montana have released the name of a 15-year-old boy who drowned while trying to swim to an island in a small lake near Miles City.
Custer County Sheriff Tony Harbaugh says Richard Smith of Trenton, Utah, drowned Monday afternoon at Spotted Eagle Lake.
Miles City Fire Department Capt. Brandon Stevens tells the Miles City Star that the boy was swimming with a relative who was unable to rescue him.
Officials searched for more than 40 minutes before locating Smith. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.
