SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 44-year-old West Valley City man has been charged with driving under the influence in a hit-and-run that killed a 79-year-old man.

Porfirio Zamora was charged Wednesday with DUI, leaving the scene and driving without a license.

Witnesses say Zamora was speeding in the parking area of an apartment complex May 31 when he hit a Jeep and then Frank Martinez.

Salt Lake City police say that when they caught up with Zamora a few minutes later, he smelled of alcohol and was slurring his speech. A breath test measured his blood alcohol content at nearly three times the legal limit.

Martinez suffered broken bones and brain injuries and died on June 4.

Zamora was listed in the Salt Lake County Jail. It's unclear whether he has an attorney.
