DAVIS COUNTY— If KSL showed up unannounced at dinnertime, would your meal get approval from a dietitian?

One unassuming family in Davis County experienced just this as Kathleen Nielson, a dietician with McKay-Dee Hospital, showed up at dinner to inspect each plate to see how healthy their dinner was.

Nielsen said she liked the whole grains in the Ivie family's chips, and recommended a cup and a half of fruit a day for growing boys. She also recommended adding half a cup of tomatoes to the salad.

She said she was impressed with the variety of foods the family had, and especially liked the flaxseed in the chips.

"When families are making dinner, we used to always start with the meat, what are we going to have for the center of the plate," Nielsen said. "Instead, I want people to start thinking about, what is my vegetable going to be, what is my grain going to be."

Mother Tara Ivie said all of Nielsen's advice was very doable.

"I think whatever I give my kids, they eat because they're hungry," Ivie said. "So it's a big job to be in charge of kid's food and nutrition because they will eat what you give them."
