LEHI, Utah (AP) -- Getting copies of public records from the city of Lehi just got expensive.
A new city ordinance allows for increasing the fees for documents requested under Utah's Government Access and Records Management Act.
The ordinance sets hourly rates for departments providing information and passes along contractor costs if one must be hired to comply with a document request.
The city could also charge $50 per hour if a department head helps fill the request. Fees for supervisory, professional support staff help range from $20 to $40 per hour.
State law says cities can charge for documents.
However, Salt Lake City-based media attorney Jeffs Hunt says the costs are not supposed to be so high that the public can't afford to access information.
