Mitt Romney and the LDS Church are taking a beating from a prominent political pundit.
MSNBC commentator Lawrence O'Donnell absolutely went off on Mitt Romney and the LDS faith during an appearance on The McLaughlin Group on PBS.
"Romney comes from a religion founded by a criminal who was anti-American, pro-slavery, and a rapist; and he comes from that lineage and says, ‘I respect this religion," O'Donnell told the group.
That wasn't all. O'Donnell calls the faith pro-slavery, calls it a racist faith, says it's "demented like Scientology," and said this was the worst political speech of his lifetime.
BYU political science professor Quinn Monson says it almost made him sick to listen to what O'Donnell had to say. "I assumed that if Romney was in the hunt, that the attacks would come. I didn't expect to see them on a mainstream show," he said.
Monson says this boils down to religious bigotry and thinks it would help Romney if someone who is not LDS would come to his defense.
Romney did get some good news today. He's being endorsed by the conservative magazine The National Review.
