SOUTH SALT LAKE — An exciting new future is unfolding for one of Utah's oldest high schools. Granite High is officially in the movie-making industry.
Tuesday, South Salt LAke announced that the 105-year-old school and it's 28-acre campus will be developed into a motion picture and television production facility. Woodbury Corporation partnered with Redman Movies and Stories to buy Granite High School for a little more than $8.4 million.
Together the two companies will invest another $40 million into making the campus into a movie and television production facility.
South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood said the project will create up to 1000 jobs and revitalize the surrounding area of South Salt Lake.
"It will really put South Salt Lake on the map as a film-friendly city," Wood said. "It will add jobs, create stimulus up and down 3300 South, and we are so excited and couldn't be more excited with the project."
Wood said one reason the city loves this deal is because Woodbury Corporation and Redman Movies and Stories will keep the look of Granite High School. All the buildings stay, but they'll be restored and used as movie and television sets, as will all the green spaces like the football field. Plus, they'll remain open for public use.
The two companies will also build a 90,000 square foot sound stage, restaurants, and office space for local businesses. Locals seem to agree.
"I'm glad to hear they are going to do something good with it, keep it as green space and keep all the buildings," said nearby resident Shelley Norr
Work at the Granite Campus will begin right away. A new show called Granite Flats is set to film their TV series there starting October 15.
