OREM — Members of a business class at Utah Valley University are working to change their classmate's life. He was diagnosed with leukemia, and now the whole class is stepping up to help.
Classmates say they noticed Jose Padilla's enthusiasm and creativity at the beginning of the year, but then something changed. His frequent nosebleeds came back with a shocking diagnosis of leukemia, and suddenly his days were full of chemotherapy. Two of his classmates, Trent Ewing and Jonathan Goudy, talk about it in a video they put together.
"It was shocking, it was completely unexpected," they said. "I had this desire like, how can I help this guy? One of our students in our class is having the hardest time of his life right now."
The entrepreneurship class comes up with a final project every year; something modeled after the real world. This year, they formed a charity called giving a dime.com *to raise the money to help Jose and his family with growing medical expenses and bills. Also, Saturday is a 5k run in Provo Canyon.
"Jose's reaction was pure joy, pure gratitude," Ewing said.
According to the Daily Herald, the website has raised more than $1,000 since Monday.
