OREM -- When the Japan Club at UVU heard about the March 11 earthquake, they abandoned their fundraiser for club activities and decided instead to raise money for relief efforts in their homeland.

"Crane for Hope" raised more than $6,000 in just eight days that was then donated to the Salt Lake branch of the American Red Cross. The choice by the club to personally fold an origami crane for each dollar donated is significant.

"Cranes are good fortune, good luck, good meaning in Japan," said club President, Tenkai Kawazoe.

The cranes were strung together and will be delivered personally by the club advisor Junko Watabe when he goes on his upcoming trip to Japan.

"This is very meaningful to us because it's such a sacrifice for you to watch what's happening in your homeland and to feel helpless. So we are very, very grateful," said Liz Merrell, Development and Community Relations Director for American Red Cross Mountain Valley Chapter, upon receiving the check.
