FARMINGTON -- A Layton couple accused of murdering the woman's 4-year-old boy have waived their rights to a speedy trial.

During scheduled court appearances Friday morning, both Nathan and Stephanie Sloop said they will allow time for both sides to thoroughly go through the more than 3,200 pages of evidence.

Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings said in this case more time is appropriate.

"Since the prelim is such a critical stage in this proceeding, and the judge has to make a determination 'does the state of Utah have it right in their charging decision?', the defense needs time to be ready," he said.

Rawlings said the delay will ensure all court proceedings are proper and reduce the chance of appeals later.

"We only want to try this case one time. We don't want issues interjected into this case," he said.

Both Nathan and Stephanie Sloop are charged with felony murder in connection with the death of Stephanie's son Ethan Stacy.

Rawlings said the case is moving in the direction of possible death penalty sentences, but it is premature for any formal declarations.
