UTAH COUNTY -- Utah County commissioners have approved a ban on spice, but only in unincorporated areas.
The ordinance passed Tuesday makes possession, use or sale of the chemically-treated herb a misdemeanor punishable by jail time and a $1,000 fine.
Spice is an herb sold in smoke shops that many use as a legal substitute for marijuana.
A grassroots effort to ban the sale of spice is underway in Ogden.
The state will likely look at outlawing it as well this legislative session.
