SANDY -- Investigators say a fire at a Sandy restaurant Friday morning is suspicious.
The fire broke out at the Tiburon Fine Dining restaurant, located at 8256 S. 700 East, around 8 a.m. An employee at a neighboring business saw the smoke coming from the building and called 911.
"[It's] suspicious in nature," said Sandy police Sgt. Dean Carriger. "[The] fire occurred in dining area of restaurant, but the cause of the fire, the ignition source, they are making the determination on that at this point."
Carriger later confirmed that the fire is being investigated as arson. Upon further investigation, fire crews found the back door had been broken and items in the dining room were lit on fire using an unknown accelerant.
Firefighters say the restaurant was closed at the time and no one was inside. It suffered minimal fire damage, but a lot of smoke damage. There is no cost estimate at this time.
Owners say Tiburon will be closed for at least a week while they clean up the mess.
