SALT LAKE CITY -- Fireworks will light up the night skies this weekend for the Fourth of July holiday. But Utahns who plan to set off fireworks themselves are warned that some restrictions are in place.
Because of extreme fire conditions this summer, the Salt Lake City Fire Department has issued geographical bans on fireworks and open fires within portions of Salt Lake City.
Those restricted areas are:
- East of Wasatch Drive and east of Virginia Street, including the University of Utah campus
- All areas north of 11th Avenue to City Creek Canyon, including City Creek Canyon
- North of 500 North behind the Capitol
- East of Beck Street
- All areas west of I-215 in Salt Lake City
- All city parks
- All canyon and interface areas
- Any areas that contain dry grass or that may lead to a quick spread of fire
Fireworks are not allowed on public lands, including U.S. Forest Service, BLM, national parks and state lands.
People living outside of Salt Lake City can check their city's website for fireworks restrictions. For example, in Draper no fireworks are allowed west of I-15, south of 13800 South and east of Highland Drive. Also, a map on Provo's website shows no firework use along the east bench.
In addition to the restricted areas, officials also warn the public:
- Only Class C fireworks are allowed. For a list of approved fireworks CLICK HERE.
- Fireworks such as bottle rockets and Roman candles are strictly prohibited
- Fireworks cannot travel more than 15 feet into the air or 10 feet on the ground
- You must be at least 16 years old to purchase fireworks
