SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank is being honored for his outspoken opposition to mandates requiring police officers to enforce U.S. immigration law.
The Latino Community Information and Education Center says Burbank's has "gone beyond the call of duty to advocate for human rights" with his actions.
Burbank's protests were spurred by the passage of Arizona's new immigration law, which requires police to ask for documentation if they suspect someone may be in the country illegally.
He says the law, and others like it being proposed, "take steps backwards."
