SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Salt Lake County residents can now raise chickens in their backyard.

The county council voted Tuesday to let residents raise chickens in neighborhoods from Magna to Millcreek.

The new ordinance would do away with old restrictive requirements. For example, residents raising hens would no longer have to notify neighbors within 300 feet and then submit a notarized statement to the county to prove it.

Sponsors of the ordinance say they really wanted to give residents the opportunity to raise the fowl.
