HURRICANE, Washington County — One person is dead after an off-road crash on state Route 59 near the Hurricane Overlook in Washington County early Sunday.

About 2:30 a.m., Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue responded to a vehicle crash near the overlook after receiving an iPhone notification of a traffic crash, and then a call stating that a vehicle had gone off a cliff, Hurricane police said in a news release. Crews located an SUV on fire that had gone off the road and down into the canyon approximately 150 to 250 feet below.

The SUV was on fire and "due to the distance of the vehicle from access points" and the "intensity of the fire," police noted that crews were unable to help any "possible passengers" in the SUV.

The vehicle was recovered, and police said due to the damage they could only determine that it was an SUV. One occupant in the vehicle was found deceased. Police have not been able to positively identify the person as of Sunday morning.

Police did not say whether they believe more people might have been inside the SUV during the crash.

Additional information has not yet been released.
