MORGAN — A long-haul truck driver ended his 40-year career Wednesday with a bang — and some flames.
Morgan County firefighters and Mountain Green Fire District responded to reports of a vehicle fire on I-84 in Morgan at 7:49 p.m. A semitruck was engulfed in flames and the firefighters worked for several hours fighting the blaze amid low temperatures and high winds.
The driver was almost done with his last haul, prior to his planned retirement, when he escaped the vehicle and watched flames consume his truck. He was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, but Morgan County fire officials said the driver was not harmed.
Fire officials at the scene said they heard the driver say, "I guess this is my way of going out in flames."
They said the off-ramp where the vehicle was located was closed for some time while the road was cleared. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
