SPRINGVILLE — A house fire in Springville trapped and killed one person Friday afternoon.

A neighbor saw the home in the area of 800 South and 400 East was on fire and tried to get in to help the person who lived there, fire officials said.

"He was able to get the door open, but he could tell there was so much smoke and flames that he couldn't make entry. It would have been very dangerous for him to do so," Springville Police Chief Lance Haight said.

Firefighters entered the home and found a 79-year-old man who had died. His name has not been released pending notification of family members.

Investigators don't yet know how the fire started but believe it was likely accidental. Neighbors said the man had lived in that house for more than 40 years.
