LEWISTON, Cache County — An elderly man died in a house fire in Lewiston Sunday morning.
Emergency crews in Lewiston responded to a 911 call of a house fire about 8:45 a.m. Sunday. "Witnesses stated that the home was fully engulfed with smoke and flames coming from the roof and windows," the Cache County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
While firefighters from Lewiston and Smithfield worked to extinguish the blaze, the resident of the home was not accounted for and no one at the scene could confirm that anyone had exited the home, according to the sheriff's office.
Joe C. Nunez, 89, had last been seen by family members in the house on Saturday night.
"After fighting the fire for some time, firefighters were able to enter the structure and confirmed that (Nunez) was inside and was deceased," the statement says. "Although this investigation is ongoing, it is believed that it was an accidental fire that resulted in a tragic death."
The fire is still under investigation by the sheriff's office and the state fire marshal.
