HURRICANE, Washington County — A woman died on Thursday while in custody at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Washington County, officials said.
Paige Godwin, 39, was found unresponsive in her cell at about 5:30 p.m., Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby said in a statement.
Deputies and medical staff attempted to revive her, while emergency responders and officers were dispatched to help. After 30 minutes, Godwin was pronounced dead at the jail, according to the statement.
The Washington County Critical Incident Task Force and state medical examiner's office were notified of the death, and investigators from those agencies responded to the jail.
"Based off the initial investigation, it appears that this may be a result of an unknown medical issue. However, the investigation is still ongoing and further details are pending the results from the medical examiner," Brooksby said.
"The family of Paige (has) been notified and our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends during this difficult time."
Court records show Godwin had been arrested the previous day for investigation of driving under the influence and related charges.
